Events this term
The ducklings have been a huge hit with Reception and the whole school so far this term. The Reception pupils watched them hatch and grow as part of their Growing topic. The first duckling was named ‘Dave the Duckling’ by the pupils. All the classes had a chance to visit them and they have now returned to their farm.
Years 2, 5 and 6 had a visit from the NSPCC last week. They learnt about different forms of abuse and how to Speak out to Stay Safe. Speaking out may be talking to a trusted adult in school or at home. They could also call the Childline Number 0800 1111.
Events: Cultural Awareness/National Dress Day
On Friday 24th May we are celebrating our next Cultural Awareness Day. This was a huge success last year. This year, each class will take a different language spoken by pupils in our school and spend the day learning about it and countries associated with it. We will then open the school to parents to celebrate with us and view the learning. If you are able to contribute anything related to your home language please speak to your child’s class teacher.
We encourage all children to come dressed in National Dress/National costume. You could choose to wear colours of any flag eg. red, white and blue; or any National Dress of your choice.

Friends
Our Friends have organized several events this year and have so far raised £870.57 for our children (including £253.45 from the Valentine’s Disco). This year they are subsidizing all school trips, as well as purchasing Book Bags for our new EYFS pupils and Leavers’ gifts for our Year 6 pupils. They always welcome new members. Please contact friends@stanground-st-johns.peterborough.sch.uk if you are able to offer any support.
Celebrations
We would like to share with you two significant celebrations of our pupils. Jenson in Year 6 has been selected for the English Ice Hockey Association’s Elite Player Programme and to play for the National Power of Eleven Team in 2024.
Harry in Year 3 has taken part in the national Swimathon and raised nearly £1000 in total for Marie Curie and Cancer Research. He is just short of his target and would welcome donations from members of our school community. The minimum donation is £2 and can be made here https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/harrywalklate
If you would like to share your child’s achievement outside school, please post a message on Tapestry so we can celebrate together.
Vacancies: Would you like to work with us?
We are currently advertising for a Maternity Cover Teacher for Mrs Brown to join our team from September. Applications can be made here www.mynewterm/com Please ask to speak to Mrs Hindmarsh to discuss the role.
Friendships
Our lunchtime team are currently working hard on improving the environment for the pupils at lunchtime. You will see that the area outside the Year 2 classroom is being set up with board games. The pupils are enjoying playing lots of lunchtime games with each other and playing on the school field, now the weather has improved. Next week Miss Walton will be introducing a Friendship Club at lunchtime.
We have also just introduced a Buddy Bench. We are encouraging pupils to sit here at break or lunch if they are feeling sad and would like some support to talk through their feelings with an adult.
Governors and Friends of SSJ
We currently have a vacancy for a Parent Governor to join our very friendly and hard-working Governing Board. Details are available on Tapestry. If you are interested in becoming a Governor, our Chair Rev. Carol, would happily discuss the role with you chair@stanground-st-johns.peterborough.sch.uk
We would like you to introduce you to our Governors.
